Leggy Cannabis Plants – Causes, Symptoms & Solutions

Reading time: approx. 7 min.

Is your cannabis plant shooting up but staying thin and unstable? In most cases, light deficiency in cannabis is the culprit. Based on hands-on experience from our Cannabis Cultivation Guide, this article explains the causes, how to limit the damage, and how to grow strong, compact plants in the future.

Symptoms of Light Deficiency

  • Long, thin stem with minimal foliage
  • Small, pale leaves spaced far apart
  • Plant leaning heavily towards the light source
  • Growth mainly upward, little horizontal development

By the time you see these signs, the problem is already advanced. The plant is putting all its energy into “climbing” towards the light instead of developing strong side branches or large leaves. Acting quickly can still redirect growth in the right direction.

Causes of Leggy Growth

  • Low light intensity (lux below optimal range)
  • Wrong spectrum – too much red light during veg leads to stretching
  • Too much distance between plant and lamp
  • High temperatures (above 27 °C / 80 °F) increase stretching
  • No airflow – stems don’t strengthen

Often several factors work together. A combination of low light and high temperature can make plants “shoot up” quickly. An incorrect spectrum can quietly affect growth for weeks.

Solutions & Prevention

  1. Optimize light intensity: Targets – seedlings: 5,000–10,000 lux; veg: 20,000–40,000 lux.
  2. Reduce distance: Bring light closer (without causing heat stress).
  3. Adjust spectrum: Use higher blue ratio (5,000–6,500 K) during veg.
  4. Regulate temperature: 22–26 °C (72–79 °F) during veg; nights 18–21 °C (64–70 °F).
  5. Ensure airflow: Gentle fan strengthens stems and prevents toppling.
  6. Replant deeper when transplanting: Stabilizes stems and promotes root growth.

Helpful Tools

Sanlight STIXX 50 Art.-Nr. Sanlig-100267

The SANlight STIXX 50 is a dimmable full-spectrum LED, perfect for seedlings and veg. With high blue content, 6-step dimming, and IP68 protection, it reliably prevents leggy growth – ideal for 30×30 to 60×60 cm grow spaces.

  • 6-step dimming – 10 % to 100 %
  • Optimal coverage for small to medium setups
  • Passive cooling, dust & waterproof

Cannoptikum Team Tips

Bella from Cannoptikum “Many confuse light deficiency with nutrient deficiency. The fastest test: bring the light closer, increase the blue ratio – within days you’ll see if internodes shorten.”
Checklist: Prevent Leggy Growth
  • ✅ Measure light intensity (20,000–40,000 lux in veg)
  • ✅ Check light distance (20–40 cm)
  • ✅ Increase blue spectrum (5,000–6,500 K)
  • ✅ Keep temperature at 22–26 °C (72–79 °F)
  • ✅ Maintain light airflow
Mark from Cannoptikum “Leggy plants are like a distress signal – they’re desperately seeking light. Spotting the problem early can save you weeks of corrective work.”

FAQ – Leggy Cannabis Plants

Long, thin, unstable stem, large internodal gaps, plant leaning heavily towards light.

No, but new growth can be more compact if light conditions are corrected.

A full-spectrum LED with high blue ratio (5,000–6,500 K) and 20,000–40,000 lux in veg.
