  • Canopy intensity: often expressed as PPFD, light per second and area
  • Daily light: the total amount of usable light delivered across the full lighting cycle of a day

If both sit in a sensible corridor, the run becomes calmer. If they are out of range, you get stress, uneven development and hard to explain effects.

PPFD and daily light in plain language

PPFD describes how much usable light hits a surface each second. It is the best anchor because it is independent from brands, watt numbers and marketing.

Daily light is the sum across the day. It depends on PPFD and the number of light hours. More hours at the same PPFD automatically means more daily light.

Rule of thumb: A calm run comes from matching intensity and daily light. More intensity is not automatically better. It is often just harder to control.

Distribution check: avoid hotspots

The most common reason for uneven development is not genetics. It is distribution. If the center is too strong and edges too weak, plants can look like different lines even inside the same run.

A simple field check:

  • Compare center, edges and corners as separate zones
  • Check if structure and pace are similar in each zone
  • If zones split consistently, distribution is the first suspect

Dimming and distance are the two levers that let you control intensity without destabilizing the system. Running a strong lamp in a small tent without dimming often means fighting the footprint.
