Water Glass Method: Sprouting

Germinating Cannabis Seeds in Water – Simple Glass-of-Water Method Explained

Reading time: approx. 10–12 minutes

Quick Answer: The water glass method is a simple germination technique, ideal for old or hard cannabis seeds. Soak the seeds in still water for 24–48 h and transplant them into moist medium as soon as the root tip appears. Important: Don’t wait too long!

The Water Glass Method is a proven technique to germinate cannabis seeds reliably—especially if the seeds are older or have a thick shell. It requires minimal equipment, is beginner-friendly, and allows for close monitoring of the germination process.

✔️ Benefits of the Water Glass Method

  • ✔️ Ideal for older or hard-shelled seeds
  • ✔️ Promotes fast germination through constant hydration
  • ✔️ You can directly observe root development

What you’ll need

  • A clean glass filled with still water (room temperature)
  • Optional: oxygen additive or hydrogen peroxide (for old seeds)
  • Tweezers or a spoon to handle the seeds
  • Starter soil, rock wool cubes, or Jiffy pellets
  • Fresh and high-quality cannabis seeds

Step-by-step guide

  1. Fill a glass with clean still water (preferably dechlorinated, 22–24 °C).
  2. Carefully place the seeds in the water. It's okay if they float.
  3. Put the glass in a dark, warm spot (e.g., cupboard or grow box).
  4. Check every 12 h. As soon as you see a small white taproot, it’s time to transplant.
  5. After 48 h at the latest, gently place germinated seeds into your chosen medium.

After germination: time to transplant

Place the germinated seeds root-tip down, about 0.5–1 cm deep, in moist but airy substrate like seedling soil or Jiffy pellets. Keep the medium damp (not wet) and maintain a stable temperature around 22–26 °C.

When is the water glass method not the best choice?

If you're already using Jiffy pellets, coco, or rock wool, direct sowing might be safer. In high humidity environments, mold can form in standing water. For fresh seeds, other germination methods are usually more effective.

FAQ about the Water Glass Method

Most seeds show a taproot within 12–36 hours. By 48 hours at the latest, you should move them into your medium.

Some seeds never sink—and that’s okay! Many still germinate successfully. If a taproot appears, there’s no reason to worry.
