✔️ Benefits of the Water Glass Method
- ✔️ Ideal for older or hard-shelled seeds
- ✔️ Promotes fast germination through constant hydration
- ✔️ You can directly observe root development
What you’ll need
- A clean glass filled with still water (room temperature)
- Optional: oxygen additive or hydrogen peroxide (for old seeds)
- Tweezers or a spoon to handle the seeds
- Starter soil, rock wool cubes, or Jiffy pellets
- Fresh and high-quality cannabis seeds
Step-by-step guide
- Fill a glass with clean still water (preferably dechlorinated, 22–24 °C).
- Carefully place the seeds in the water. It's okay if they float.
- Put the glass in a dark, warm spot (e.g., cupboard or grow box).
- Check every 12 h. As soon as you see a small white taproot, it’s time to transplant.
- After 48 h at the latest, gently place germinated seeds into your chosen medium.
Don’t leave seeds in water longer than 48 h! Without oxygen, rot and mold can develop.
After germination: time to transplant
Place the germinated seeds root-tip down, about 0.5–1 cm deep, in moist but airy substrate like seedling soil or Jiffy pellets. Keep the medium damp (not wet) and maintain a stable temperature around 22–26 °C.
Recommended accessory:
✓ Promotes high germination success with ideal microclimate
✓ Perfect for Jiffy pellets and other starter media
✓ Compact & reusable
pH testing made simple:
✓ Easy to use with no meter needed
✓ Works for both water and soil
✓ Ideal for beginners and organic growing
When is the water glass method not the best choice?
If you're already using Jiffy pellets, coco, or rock wool, direct sowing might be safer. In high humidity environments, mold can form in standing water. For fresh seeds, other germination methods are usually more effective.
Conclusion: Simple method – with limitations
The water glass method is great for reviving tough or old seeds. However, if you want more control and fewer risks, you may prefer scarification methods, germination aids, or seedling care.
