Hemp Clothing and Alternative Apparel by virblatt

A guest article by virblatt – sustainable clothing rooted in Northern Thailand.

Where does our hemp come from?

The question might seem unusual at first. Who actually wonders where the hemp in their clothing comes from? But for the fashion label virblatt, which produces alternative clothing in Northern Thailand, this is part of the daily engagement with materials, origin, and fairness. virblatt was founded with the intention of combining traditional Asian craftsmanship with modern, conscious fashion. Hemp plays a central role as a sustainable and robust raw material.

Tracing the Origins of Hemp – The #hempjourney Project

As the virblatt team developed more and more hemp products and processed large quantities of hemp fabrics month after month, the desire to learn more about the origins grew. Where does the material come from? Who produces it – and how? The search for answers led to a special project: #hempjourney. After months of research and many conversations – including with official agencies in Northern Thailand – the founders discovered a small mountain village inhabited by the country's largest Hmong community. The Hmong are an ethnic minority in Southeast Asia with their own language, history, and traditions. In Thailand, they live in small communities, often in remote regions, and are engaged in the legal cultivation of hemp.

Traditional Craft Meets Modern Design

The virblatt team was given the opportunity to immerse themselves in this world for a year and follow the entire process – from sowing the seeds to harvesting and processing. The hemp is grown completely organically, without pesticides or insecticides. After drying, the stalks are manually processed into fibers, spun, and finally woven into fabrics on wooden looms. This part of the work is particularly impressive. It's rare to encounter such an original craft. The sounds of the wooden looms, the patience and precision of the weavers, the vibrant connection between people and materials – all of this made the process something special for virblatt. The resulting fabric is initially quite coarse and rough. Unsuitable for t-shirts or underwear, but ideal for products that require durability, stability, and character: backpacks, shoes, jackets, and accessories. virblatt consciously uses the traditional hemp fabric in these areas, creating a connection between past and present, cultural heritage and modern fashion expectations.

Why Hemp Is More Than a Trend

But hemp is not just sustainable – it also has fascinating properties: antibacterial, odor-neutral, breathable, and extremely durable. For the virblatt team, it is more than just a material – it is a mindset. Hemp represents a more conscious use of resources, authenticity, and a return to traditional values. The collaboration with the Hmong was not just a logistical or business decision, but a personal one. Trust had to be built, understanding developed, and real exchange nurtured. The virblatt team is now closely connected with the community – a partnership based on respect and appreciation. That's also why virblatt sees its role not only in selling clothing. It's about telling stories, providing insights, and building bridges – between continents, cultures, and ways of thinking. Clothing here becomes a medium of connection, an expression of attitude, and an invitation to engage with what we wear on our skin every day.

A Fabric with a Future

The story of hemp is ancient – and more relevant than ever. In a world where resources are dwindling and sustainable action is becoming increasingly important, hemp is a material with great potential. virblatt wants to continue on this path: with fair production, lived transparency, and products that do more than just look good. The hemp fabric from the small mountain village in Northern Thailand tells a story. Of patience, craftsmanship, cultural knowledge, and the possibility to rethink fashion. And maybe that’s what drives virblatt the most: creating clothing that connects. Between humans and nature. Between tradition and contemporary spirit. Between you and a story you can wear.
