Growing Cannabis for Beginners – Your Guide

Growing Cannabis for Beginners: Step-by-Step Guide

Reading time: approx. 10 min.

Growing cannabis means germinating seeds, establishing healthy seedlings, managing light, water and nutrients, and harvesting at the right time. With the right approach, even beginners can achieve high-quality results. This beginner’s grow guide takes you step by step – from germination to harvest – with links to detailed resources.

Choosing Cannabis Seeds

Selecting the right cannabis seeds is crucial, as each strain has unique traits. Beginners should start with robust, easy-to-grow genetics. Recommended starting point: Top 10 Beginner Cannabis Seeds.

Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Feminized seeds produce almost exclusively female plants – no need to remove males, guaranteed bud production.

Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds

Autoflowering seeds enter flowering automatically after a few weeks. They are resilient and low-maintenance – ideal for first grows.

Seeds vs. Clones

Seeds are usually the safer choice for beginners: stronger root systems and less sensitive to environmental changes. Clones require more experience and controlled conditions.

Best Options for Beginners

  • Autoflowers for quick and easy cycles
  • Feminized Indicas – hardy and forgiving
  • Hybrids with short flowering times for fast results

1. Seed Germination

Short answer:

Moist, warm, dark – until the taproot reaches 0.5–1 cm, then transfer into substrate.

Detailed answer:

Place seeds between moist paper towels (or in plugs/peat pellets) at 20–24 °C in darkness. Constant humidity (not soaked) and oxygen are essential. Old or hard seeds may need pre-treatment – see scarification & stratification. Once the taproot emerges, carefully plant into a light, airy substrate. For further basics see The Cannabis Seedling and germination guides.

2. Feeding During the First Weeks

Short answer:

Less is more: gentle nutrient solution, root stimulator, no “hot mixes” for seedlings.

Detailed answer:

Start with a light mix substrate and a root stimulator. Increase EC only once growth accelerates. Watch for warning signs: pale leaves → possible nitrogen deficiency (see Nitrogen Deficiency); burnt tips → overfertilization/salt stress (see Nutrient Issues). Aim for steady growth, not forced acceleration.

3. Transplanting for Healthy Growth

Short answer:

Transplant once roots reach the pot edge – always into loose, airy soil, one size up.

Use suitable pots and a quality substrate. For timing and methods see Repotting Cannabis.

4. Determining Plant Sex

Short answer:

With regular seeds, watch for pre-flowers early; remove males before pollination.

5. Feeding During Flowering

Short answer:

Raise PK, lower N – gradually, following plant response rather than just charts.

Detailed answer:

Flowering requires more phosphorus and potassium. Increase nutrients progressively and watch foliage: dark, clawed leaves = too much N; burnt tips = salt stress. Misdiagnoses are common – compare with nutrient issues and over- vs underwatering.

6. Flushing Before Harvest

Short answer:

Last 1–2 weeks: clear water only (medium-dependent), monitor drain EC.

Detailed answer:

Flushing helps reduce residual nutrients in the medium. In soil, a moderate flush often suffices; in coco/hydro, monitor EC more closely. Goal: clean maturity without excess buildup.

7. The Right Harvest Time

Short answer:

Harvest when most trichomes are milky with a small portion turning amber.

For outdoor timing see Croptober – Outdoor Harvest Guide.

Essential Indoor Equipment

Sanlight LED Grow Lights – Efficiency & Maximum Output

Many growers rely on Sanlight LEDs – high output, long lifespan, low power use.

  • Sanlight EVO series: Modular, intense setups.
  • Sanlight Q-series Gen2: Efficient for small to medium tents.

Our recommendation: Sanlight EVO 4-100 with Ambient Grow Tent Q100 (Homebox)

Indoor Grow Checklist

  • Lighting: LED grow lamps
  • Ventilation: filter & exhaust system
  • Substrate: soil or coco
  • Nutrients: base + bloom fertilizers
  • pH control: meter/indicator
  • Timers: for lights & fans

✔ Want the perfect setup? Check indoor grow equipment & nutrients.

More info & common questions

Short answer: Around 8–14 weeks depending on genetics; autoflowers are quicker, photoperiods take longer.

Explanation: Duration varies by strain, lighting and environment. Indoors, photoperiod strains are controlled by light cycles; autoflowers flower regardless of light. Stable conditions shorten the overall cycle.

Short answer: No – darkness, warmth and moisture are key.

Explanation: Light plays no major role in germination. Focus on 20–24 °C, consistent humidity and oxygen. See preparing old seeds and seedling care for details.

Short answer: Essential: LED lights, ventilation/filter, substrate, base nutrients.

Explanation: pH control, timers and a grow tent improve stability and yields. Recommended setups: indoor equipment and Sanlight LEDs.
